친구들과 함께 자주가던 학교 앞 술집에선
At the Pub near the school, we used to go to,
각종 스포츠 게임을 볼수 있게 많은 TV가 여러대 있었고,
had many TVs playing sports games,
맥주, 와인, 칵테일 보트카와 같은 독한 술을 파는 미국식 술집이었다.
and had a full bar with beer, wine, and hard liquor. It was an American style Pub.
우리는 술집에서 보드카, 데킬라, 럼이 썩여져있는 칵테일인 ’롱 아일랜드’라는 이름의 술을 자주 마시곤 하였다.
We used to drink ‘long island ice ties’, which is a mixed cocktail with vodka, tequila, and rum.
우리가 그 술을 선호하였던 이유는 아주 단순했다.
And the reason why we preferred the cocktail was very simple,
그저 싸고 강했기 때문이다.
it was just cheap and strong.
매주 수요일마다 단골집에서는 단 돈 $3달러에 한잔을 마실수 있었기 때문이다 (평소 보통 한잔에 최소 $6불은 한다.)
Especially, every Wednesday, the pub offered a $3 ’the long islands’, when usually it was $6 per drink.
또한, 가난한 학생들에게는 저렴한 가격에 도수가 꽤나 높아서 금새 취할수 있는 장점이 있기도 하였다. (하지만 다음날 숙취는 최악이다...)
It is a perfect choice for students that don’t have much money, but want to party with friends. You get drunk fast and the hangover is a killer the next day.

그렇게 시험기간이 아닌 수요일 저녁에 물리학과 친구들과 난 함께 종종 롱아일랜드를 마시며, 포켓볼 , 카드 게임, 노래 부르며 춤을 추면서, 물리학을 공부하며 받은 스트레스를 날려버리는 시간이 되기도 하였다.
With the exception of mid term or final weeks, we used to drink long islands together and play pool, sing, dance, playing card games. This was the way to relieve stressful physics classes.
그 날, 우린 파란 원피스를 입고 온 그녀와 단골 술집으로 들어가서
That day we entered the pub with the girl in the blue dress,
‘롱아일랜드’를 주문하고, 술집 안에 있던 포켓볼을 치기로 하였다.
ordered the long island ice teas and got our table to play pool.
“코리안 곰 & 러시안 곰 VS 그녀와 센프란 시스코에서온 곰”
“Russian & Korean Bear VS. the girl in blue and a friend from San Francisco”
첫번째 게임, 그녀는 '하나, 둘, 셋' 한 큐에 공을 포켓속으로 쏙쏙 넣기 시작했다.
The first game, ‘one, two, three..’ she started to hit the balls in the holes.
오랜만에 큐대를 잡은 난 생각외로 고전하였다.
I was struggling to make the points, because I hadn’t played in a long time.
하지만 난 고등학교 친구들과 다져온 사구 실력으로 하나, 둘 감을 되찾고 있었다.
After a while, I started remembering the games I played with my High School buddies and it started coming back to me.
그리고 나의 막판 대 활약으로
The tables turned,
코리안-러시안 곰 팀이 공 하나 차이로 어렵사리 승리하게 되었다.
it was Korean & Russian Bears’ time to win.

간발의 차로 게임에 져서 아쉬워 그런지 그녀는 씩씩거리며,
The girl in blue was very disappointed with the loss and wanted a rematch.
“다음판은 지는 사람이 롱아일랜드 술 사주기로 내기 하자!”며 도전을 제안해왔다.
“Let’s make a bet on the next game. Whoever looses, buys everyone long islands” she suggested.
속으로 난 “훗! 승부욕 있군” 생각하며
‘Huh! she is competitive!” I thought.
“좋아!” 대답하고 두번째 게임을 시작 하였다,
“Okey!” I answered and we started the second game.
공짜술을 위해 난 최선을 다해서 테이블 위 모든 공을 빠른 속도로 없애 버렸다.
With the free drinks on the line, the game ended very quickly, with me making all the balls.
또 다시 코리안-러시안 베어팀의 승리!
Again a victory for Korean & Russian Bear!
내기에서 이긴 롱아일랜드의 맛은 전에 맛보지 못했던 꿀 맛이었다.
That long island tasted better than the ones before it.
이번엔 내가 먼저 “한판 더 칠래?” 물었다.
This time, I made a suggestion “One more game?”
복수에 불타던 그녀, 나의 제안을 받아드렸다.
She was itching to take her revenge. She accepted my challenge.
그 결과, 그녀는 결국 마지막 세번째 게임에 승리하게 되었다.
She did win the last game
그리고 내가 산 롱아일랜드를 승리의 미소와 함께 홀짝 거리며 마셨다.
and she was drinking her long island with a victorious smile.

그렇게 우리의 포켓 볼 전쟁으로 불타는 금요일을 재미있게 보내고,
That Friday was extremely exciting and fun!
금요일의 일들이 주말동안 내 머리속에서 맴 돌았었다,
The thoughts of that Friday stuck with me through the weekend,
하지만, 시간이 지나고 한 동안 난 그녀를 볼 수 없었다.
but time passes and I did not see her for a while.
그러던 어느날, 익숙하지 않은 목소리와 처음 보는 전화번호를 가진 한 여자로 부터 전화 한통을 받게 되는데...
One day, I get a phone call from an unknown number with a woman voice that I don’t recognize...
