우리가 처음 이 땅을 알게 된것은 눈이 온 겨울 날이었습니다.
We first saw the land on a snowy winter day.
그 당시 겨울이고, 넓은 땅에는 눈이 쌓여,
Everything was cold and everything was covered in snow,
우리는 어떤 식물들이 이 곳에 자라는지 알수 없었습니다.
so we couldn’t determine what type of plants were in the area.

하지만 봄날이 되자, 따스한 기온에 점점 보지 못했던 식물과 꽃들이 자라나고,
But, in Spring, all the trees, plants, and flowers that we couldn’t see before started blooming and
우리는 많은 아름다운 식물과 꽃 그리고 나무 들을 이 곳에서 볼 수 있게 되었습니다.
now we could see and recognize them.

그 중 가장 눈에 많이 보이는 것은 장미 줄기와 같이, 줄기에 많은 가시가 있는 식물이었습니다.
Amongst all these, the most prominent was a plant with large thorns and a stem like a rose.
Mr. 엘크가 말했습니다,
Mr. Elk said,
“그거 블랙베리야.”
“That is a blackberry bush!”

처음에 코알라부부는 우리만의 유기농 블랙베리로 따서 먹고, 블랙베리 잼도 만들고 하는 행복한 상상을 하였습니다.
Initially, KoArLA family were happy thinking about the wonderful time they will have picking berries on our land and making organic jams.
하지만, 점점 봄이 깊어지자...
However, as we got further and further into Spring,
깊어지는 봄 만큼 기하급수적으로 늘어나는 블랙베리.
the blackberries started growing at an exponential rate.
결국에는 우리가 집을 짓기위한 터까지 블랙베리로 뒤덥혀지고.
The blackberry bushes were now fully covering the land where we were going to build.
좌절감과 절망감이 행복한 마음을 덮기 시작했습니다.
Frustration mixed with an ounce of despair started taking over the initial happiness.
그 날 이후...
Starting that day,
우리와 "블랙베리와의 전쟁"을 선포 하였습니다.
We declared the WAR ON BLACKBERRIES.
우리가 블랙베리를 제거하기위해 사용한 방법들은
We tried so many ways to remove these blackberries.
첫번째, 정원 가위를 이용한 공격!
First, Attacking with garden scissors.
처음에 우리가족은 새땅에서 일을 한다는 기쁜 마음으로 즐겁게 가위로 하나하나 블랙베리를 자르고 있었습니다.
On our first attempt, we used scissors, with the sense of enthusiasm to work on our new land.

하지만, 그 기쁨도 아주 잠시, 자르고 잘라도 끝이 안보이던 블랙베리들의 승리로 보여졌습니다. 그래서 우리는 다른 전략을 써 보기로 결심하게 되었습니다.
But that excitement was short lived as never-ending blackberries seemed to be winning the war. Our strategy changed.
둘, 잔디깍기 기계 이용!
Next came the trimmer,
가위로 자르는 것 보다는 빨랐습니다. 하지만 줄기가 아주 굵은것들은 자르는데 시간이 걸리고, 또 자르고 난뒤
which helped save some time, but was no where near what we were hopping for.
긴 블랙베리 줄기를 하나하나 가위로 짧게 분쇄시키는데 시간이 걸리는 단점이 있었습니다.
Plus, we were left with the long stems that we needed to shred manually.

다른 사람들이 블랙베리와 전투하는 법을 소개 해주기도 하였습니다.
It got to the point where others started introducing ways we could combat these blackberries.
언젠가 블랙베리를 먹는 염소를 빌리는 것도 생각해보게 되었습니다. (실제로 여기 포틀랜드에서는 염소를 빌려주는 곳이 있습니다!
At one point we were considering renting live goats to eat the blackberries. (The rental of goats actually exists in Portland!
누가 그런 생각을 할 수 있겠습니까?!)

셋, 빌리염소 이용! (살아있는 염소가 아닙니다;)
Third, came the Billy Goat. (NOT a live goat)
이 기계는 잔디 깍는 기계보다 크고 가솔린 사용하는 작은 엔진을 가진 기계입니다.
This is a large grass mower that has a small engine and runs of gasoline.
마치 청소기로 방안을 청소하듯, 우리는 블랙베리를 아주 빠른 속도로 정리 할 수 있었습니다.
Using the Billy Goat, we were able to finally remove most of the blackberries at a much faster past.
이 기계의 장점은 한번 지나가면 블랙배리 줄기를 따로 정리 하지 않아도 갈기갈기 분쇄시켜주어서, 뒷정리 할 필요 없었다는 것이었습니다.
It even shredded the stems without us having to do anything extra.
하지만 단점이라면 너무 경사가 진 곳에서는 이 빌리염소를 사용 할 수 없었다는 것이었습니다.
On the other hand, we could’t use it on steep areas.
그래서 선택한 마지막 일격! 약치기!
We came to our last resort,
우리는 빌리염소로 없애지 못한 경사면과, 다시는 블랙베리가 자라지 않도록 집터 주위를 위주로 살포하였습니다.
We used a blackberry removal spray in the areas that were too steep for the Billy Goat.

만약 블랙베리의 침입을 당해보지 않으셨다면 때때로 오는 그 좌절감을 알 수가 없을 것입니다.
If you have never had to deal with a blackberry infestation, you don’t know how frustrating and amusing it could be at times.
Mrs. 코알라는 이것을 ‘프리즈 챌린지’ 같다하였습니다.
Mrs. KoArLA seemed to like the ‘Freeze Challenge’ that constantly would take place as we were clearing. I will explain:
블랙베리는 긴 줄기와 날카로운 가시를 가지고 있기 때문에, 다리에 가시가 걸려있다면 꼼짝없이 멈춰있어야하기 때문입니다.
Since blackberries have long stems and sharp thorns, if you get one stuck to your leg, which happens ofter, you have to freeze.
안 그럴경우, 금방 가시가 몸에 찔리거나 상처를 내게 됩니다 (그나마 다행인경우)
Otherwise, within seconds, you will be covered in scratches and thorns (best case scenario).
어느날 한번은 Mrs. KoArLA 는 블랙배리 줄기에 걸려넘어져 블랙배리 가시위로 엉덩방아를 찍었습니다... 으아악!
Once Mrs. KoArLA ended up caught by a bush and fell on her butt... Ouch!
그렇게 블랙 베리와의 전쟁을 통해 블랙베리를 제거 하였지만 우리 또한 피를 보았습니다.

아직도 땅 곳곳에는 많은 양의 블랙베리들이 생존해 있습니다.
However, we were not successful at removing all the blackberries from our land,
그리고 우린 올해 봄 또 몰려올지 모르는 블랙 베리군단을 대비해 지금도 만만의 준비를 하고 있습니다.
and, we are preparing for a new battle this Spring.
